Music Blogs Are Pretty Awesome
There are good movies. There are a few good new cd's. There's even a time when you stand up on a stool, get everyone's attention, throw out a roll of 20's at their cherub faces and laugh. All these are good. But, to be honest, 2004, for me, for the most part, well for some part...at least when I'm sitting here doing nothing...was about the music blog.
Old LizPyz has sent me a link which I checked out and in turn found very extraordinary. It has maybe 100 good bands and a thousand good tunes. All this music is there for you and free because no one really knows these bands yet. And when I say no one I'm talking about you, yes you, wearing Banana Republic, watching MTV and never missing an episode of the Bachelor. Yes you who are well too lazy to learn about good stuff by now and the back of that Aerosmith CD is wearing out and that goddamn August Everything After poster is starting to crinkle on the sides. YOU!
I haven't downloaded any mp3's from bearshare or kazaa, or whatever you crazy kids are using now a days to get your illegal music, in a long time. So I get my music advice and love from sad bastard, dork, too smart for their own lifestyle, introverted, slightly bitter, and always lying music blogs.
LiPyz's link is to a place called the Crutch. It's Chicago's music scene magazine. Baltimore doesn't really deserve one, and personally, as an avid reader and even one time contributor to our own
"City Paper" nothing is sadder than that
"the Short List" section.
Quick example of "Short List" section in my own interpretation:
Fri: Come see Ryan Fueglemeinen slam at Auf Die Music with the rest of the mullets. The Mojo Room hosts Eat Your Mom's Ass and Two Drunk Too Fart. And I never leave the Ottobar out as DJ Rickity Rooftop spins the classics of the Smiths, Jam, Angry Girls Dig Graves and all other music you want to slit your throat by.....
Anyway - sites like this allow me to find new music. And to be honest while most of it is balls awful. You know what I have come to realize? It's not the music I love. It's not the actual tune, although once hearing music for along time you can spot the 'hotness' after about 30 seconds, it's the idea that these people playing this song aren't far removed from me. I can look at the stage and then I can hang out with them at the bar. I can almost...man just almost...pull up and have a conversation. And you know what...that's the real love right there. That makes it mine...but anyway...
Cheers to the Music Blog - old
Large Hearted Boy has a whole list of them and if you aren't going to his site at least once a week to see what good shit he has then I guess you didn't read this far down anyway and I can give you the big ole' "go fuck yourself..." hahaha
