This Is Why I Want Out of Here
So I just attempted to have a real conversation with Katy and Thomas. These are two new teachers who were discussing how wonderful Korea is. I immediately jumped on the bait given that they had only been here a combined 3 three months and were now making uneducated opinions on the future state of a country that I feel has a strong possibility of either failing or blowing up to be a real player. The problems that lay around Korea are
- it's bordered by two communist countries(one is currently really angry),
- it has no major exports undersigned (Samsung is the expection, but Kia, Daewoo, and Hyundai are all foreigner majority owned),
- it's population boom of the mid-eighties to current day has caused serious housing and employment problems,
- the won is entirely too dependant on the dollar,
- Capitalism is much more evil here than in other capitalist countries (i.e. the wealth gap is immense)
- Education is not free
- The worlds largest consumer of alcohol (per capita)
- President Roh boasts on not willing to be an international player and openly confronts the west
- They house other country's Armys as a permanent deterent of confrontation
- No Job market for the young
- Obsessive love of consumerism has moved them past the U.S. in average consumer debt
- Lack of property ownership
- Rich/poor urban areas all poor rural areas
- Non-global outlook and interaction
The good things about Korea
- Young intelligent technologically advanced work force
- Traditional interactions of courtesy and respect
- A proven hierarchy of patriarchal family values
- Young culture of new free thinkers
- Invaluable base camp for the US to protect against communist China
- Young energetic President that has civil liberties and the lasting doctrine of democracy as his main plaform
- Fertile tropical farm land with inexpensive labor
- Small concentrated mobile country with communications even at slowest taking a day to reach correspondants
- Only one border and no immigration
Anyway these were all my arguments and they had nothing...I mean how can they have nothing and not only did they have nothing they threw their nothing at me with vigor. "I just think that it's gonna be like this...!" What a joke. I want out of this shit hole. What a fucking joke these people are. I;m often ashamed that we have the same job. I'm ashamed that they represent western people in any way. I think Keith and I got real lucky to find each other. Like, he's a smart dude, he's a little old but he's a smart informed guy. Some days I just get sick of being here!
